The Plantar Fascia are the small tendons attaching the heel to the toes. They often shorten overnight as the calf contracts during sleep, causing foot pain in the morning as you attempt to walk normally. This can be caused by improper footwear (high heels, for example), overuse, and sometimes calf contracture while sleeping (Charley horse!) Plantar Fasciitis is fairly easy to treat, the splint holds the foot at 90 degrees overnight, avoiding calf contracture and limiting the shortening of the fascia. Morning stretching is also effective, see your doctor or physical therapist for stretching exercises.
